About this site
This is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages, with a Nostr/nsite mirror for censorship-resistant access. There is no application server. Country pages and index data are generated from structured source records and updated automatically via GitHub Actions.
What the map shows
The map uses color-coded markers to reflect country-level persecution severity: red for Extreme/Very High, orange for High, yellow for Moderate, and blue for Low. Clicking a country opens a page with historical background, modern context, data fields (scores and statistics when available), recent incident samples, and linked sources.
Data sources
This project relies on publicly available reports and feeds. Country pages reference the specific reports used for each entry. The table below matches the source chips shown on the site footer.

Source status key (shown on the site footer):
Sources evaluated but not used
Candidates below were reviewed and are not used in the pipeline or country narratives. The Quality column is the same A/B/C/Infra/X scale as above: X means legal, mission, or permanent ops block; A/B/C means the content could fit but we are not wiring it yet (usually no workable nightly feed). Overlap with another source alone is not a reason for rejection.

Licensing
This repository uses a multi-license model (not a single Creative Commons grant for the whole tree):
- Project code, templates, and curated narratives we author are under the MIT License.
- Archived research under
data/archives/stays under each upstream provider’s terms indata/archives/NOTICE(U.S. government works; Open Doors free use with attribution; V-Dem FoRB subset CC BY-SA). - Live news feeds and indexes are citation-only: we link and may show a short attributed excerpt. We do not republish full articles, and all-rights-reserved or NC/ND sources are never placed in the archive.
V-Dem’s share-alike applies to that adapted indicator subset, not to unrelated scripts or site chrome. A whole-repo CC BY-SA license would mislabel Open Doors, U.S. government works, and software.
Archived research materials
A one-time archive under data/archives/ stores legally redistributable research used to enrich country pages:
- U.S. State Department IRF country chapters (U.S. government works)
- USCIRF annual report PDF and country pages (U.S. government works)
- Open Doors World Watch Research persecution-dynamics dossiers (free use/distribution with © Open Doors International attribution)
- V-Dem FoRB indicator subset (CC BY-SA)
See data/archives/NOTICE for license details. Country pages cite these sources and may show short excerpts; they do not republish full report bodies.
Update workflow
A GitHub Actions workflow runs daily (and on manual dispatch). It fetches external sources, regenerates country pages and JSON assets, runs tests, commits data updates, and deploys the public site to the gh-pages branch. After a successful Pages deploy, the same public files are republished to Nostr via nsite. Same-repo pull requests get a sticky preview link under /pr-preview/pr-N/.
Primary sources (Open Doors, Freedom House, OWID, USCIRF, State Dept) gate the job: only a clean ok status proceeds; failed, partial, and cached abort generate/deploy. Secondary sources (see the used-sources table above — MSN, GDELT, OHCHR, VID, GCR, ACN, CSW, ICC, Forum 18, MEC, Bitter Winter, Release International, VOM, ChinaAid, Info Chrétienne, OSCE, UNSR FoRB, HRW, Amnesty, Barnabas, CSI, CNA, Fides, ACI Prensa, HRWF, ADF, WEA, Jubilee, IPPFoRB, and others) enrich when available and never abort deploy; failures are summarized as warnings. Only public site files are uploaded to Pages — not scrape caches under data/fetched/ (runtime-only; not tracked in git).
Censorship-resistant access
The site is also published on Nostr via nsite (same content as GitHub Pages; republished automatically after successful deploys). Use either:
- Gateway (browser): https://2vu4veopeh8g2tkli0pmbu2gtrmcicht56a5k9edx63jy6l7tcpersecutio.nsite.lol/

About the creator
This site was created by Joey as a companion tool for SIT: Solidarietà Internazionale Trinitaria, the Trinitarian Order’s international solidarity ministry supporting persecuted Christians worldwide. SIT works to raise awareness and provide concrete aid to Christians facing persecution because of their faith. For practical next steps, sharing country pages, contacting representatives, and supporting SIT and peer organizations, see What you can do.
Contributing
Edits are tracked in the repository as structured data. To suggest a source, correction, or new country entry, open an issue or pull request. See the README for the fetch → collect → generate → pytest workflow.
